Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon

Columba elphinstonii

The Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon (Columba elphinstonii) is a medium-sized pigeon species endemic to the island of Sri Lanka. It is characterized by its striking plumage, with a predominantly gray body, iridescent green and purple patches on the neck, and a distinct white patch on the wings. These pigeons inhabit the dense tropical forests and montane regions of Sri Lanka, where they forage for fruits, seeds, and small insects. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon faces conservation challenges, and its population is declining. Efforts are underway to protect its remaining habitats and ensure its survival.
