St. Helena Crake, Zapornia astrictocarpus, was an extinct rail from St. Helena in the tropical south-east Atlantic Ocean. It belonged to the family Rallidae and was one of the island’s flightless rails. The species is known from almost complete skeletons found in the Prosperous Bay area. Its remains were smaller than those of the larger Saint Helena rail, and a distinctive carpometacarpus helped set it apart. It is thought to have lost flight on an island without predators, before mammals introduced after colonisation drove it out.
