Stejneger's Petrel

Pterodroma longirostris (Stejneger, 1893)

Stejneger's Petrel, Pterodroma longirostris, breeds on Alejandro Selkirk in the Juan Fernandez Islands far west of central Chile and ranges across the Pacific outside the breeding season, reaching offshore waters south of Japan and also the seas off southern coastal Chile. It is a seabird in the petrel family and the tubenose order. The species is a pelagic bird that comes to land only to nest and raise its young. Its name honours Leonhard Stejneger, and the scientific name refers to its long bill.
