Stephanie's Astrapia

Astrapia mayeri

Stephanie's Astrapia is a species of bird-of-paradise found in the mountain forests of Papua New Guinea. The male is a stunning bird with iridescent purple and green plumage, elongated black tail feathers, and a prominent chest shield. The female is less conspicuous, with predominantly brown plumage. These birds are known for their elaborate courtship displays, which involve intricate dances and vocalizations. They primarily feed on fruits, insects, and arthropods. Due to habitat loss and hunting, Stephanie's Astrapia is considered vulnerable to extinction.
