Storm's Stork

Ciconia stormi (Blasius, W, 1896)

Storm's Stork, Ciconia stormi, is a stork of the Oriental Region, breeding in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, the Mentawai and Pagai islands west of central Sumatra, and Borneo. It is tied to dense lowland forest, especially riverine and peat swamp woodland, and stays below 240 metres above sea level. The species was described in 1896 by Blasius. It is the rarest of the storks and has long been declining, with deforestation of its forest home identified as the main cause. On Borneo and Sumatra it occurs at low density, and it is also present in small numbers in peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand.
