Streaked Shearwater

Calonectris leucomelas

The Streaked Shearwater is a medium-sized seabird that belongs to the Procellariidae family. It has a dark brownish-black plumage with white streaking on the underparts, and a distinctive pale crescent-shaped patch around the eye. These birds are highly adapted for life at sea, with long, slender wings for efficient gliding and a tube-like structure on their bill for excreting excess salt. Streaked Shearwaters are pelagic birds, spending most of their lives on the open ocean, only returning to land to breed. They are skilled fliers and can cover vast distances during their migrations. Their haunting calls are often heard in their breeding colonies on remote islands.
