Striated Heron

Butorides striata

The Striated Heron, also known as the Mangrove Heron, is a small and stocky heron found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It has a distinctive streaked appearance, with a blue-gray back and wings, a white throat, and a chestnut-colored neck. This species is often found in coastal habitats such as mangroves, estuaries, and lagoons, where it hunts for fish, crustaceans, and insects. The Striated Heron is known for its stealthy hunting behavior, often standing motionless at the water's edge before striking at its prey with lightning speed. Despite being widespread, the species faces threats from habitat loss and human disturbance.
