Piculus callopterus (Lawrence, 1862)

Stripe-cheeked Woodpecker, Piculus callopterus, is a woodpecker of Panama in Middle America, where it is confined to that country. It lives in humid forest, using both the interior and the margins, from 300 to 900 m. The species is found from west-central Panama east to Darién Province, mostly on the Caribbean side. It is a resident throughout its range. The bird was first described by Lawrence in 1862 and is the only member of its type. Males and females differ mainly in the head pattern, with the male showing red across the forehead and cheek and the female with red limited to the rear crown and hindneck.
