Stygian Owl

Asio stygius (Wagler, 1832)

Stygian Owl, Asio stygius, breeds widely across Middle America and South America, with a range that also reaches Mexico, Cuba and Hispaniola. It is a resident owl of open country and lightly wooded places, including pine and cloud forest, thorn scrub, cerrado, plantations and urban parks. The species is dark overall, with a blackish face edged paler, a whitish forehead and long ear tufts. Its plumage is similar in both sexes, and the subspecies differ mainly in the tone of the upperparts and in size.
