Subantarctic Shearwater

Puffinus elegans Giglioli & Salvadori, 1869

Subantarctic Shearwater, Puffinus elegans, is a petrel in the family Procellariidae that breeds in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Its breeding sites include Tristan da Cunha and Gough in the south Atlantic, the Star Keys in the Chatham Islands east of South Island, and the Antipodes Islands south-east of South Island in New Zealand. Outside the breeding season it reaches the Falkland Islands and south-west Africa, and it is also found widely in southern New Zealand seas and along the south-central Chilean coast. It was described by Giglioli & Salvadori in 1869.
