Sulawesi Ground Dove

Macropygia macassariensis

The Sulawesi Ground Dove (Macropygia macassariensis) is a small to medium-sized dove species found in the forests and woodlands of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It has a distinctive plumage with a pale grey head, chestnut upperparts, and a white belly. This ground-dwelling bird forages for seeds, fruits, and insects on the forest floor, using its long bill to probe the leaf litter. The Sulawesi Ground Dove is known for its low, mournful cooing call, often heard in the early morning and late afternoon. Despite facing habitat loss due to deforestation, the species is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
