Sulawesi Scops Owl

Rhamphococcyx calyorhynchus

The Sulawesi Scops Owl (Rhamphococcyx calyorhynchus) is a small to medium-sized owl species native to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is characterized by its distinctively large, bright orange eyes and mottled brown and grey plumage, providing excellent camouflage in its forest habitat. These nocturnal birds are known for their haunting, rhythmic hooting calls that echo through the dense foliage at night. The Sulawesi Scops Owl primarily inhabits lowland and montane forests, where it roosts in tree cavities during the day and hunts for insects, small mammals, and birds at night. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and deforestation, the conservation status of the Sulawesi Scops Owl is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
