Summer Tanager

Piranga rubra

The Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) is a striking bird found in the woodlands and forests of North and South America. Males are a brilliant red, while females are a more subdued yellowish-green. They are known for their distinctive song, often described as a hoarse, robin-like warble. Summer Tanagers primarily feed on insects, catching them in flight or gleaning them from foliage. They are also known to eat fruits and berries. These birds prefer open woodlands, forest edges, and riparian areas, and can often be found in oak and pine forests. They are known for their solitary nature and are often seen perched high in the canopy.
