Polytelis swainsonii (Desmarest, 1826)

Superb Parrot, Polytelis swainsonii, is a parrot of inland south-eastern Australia, breeding from north-central New South Wales to north-central Victoria and moving as far as northern New South Wales outside the breeding season. It was first described by Desmarest in 1826. The species is mainly bright green, with darker flight feathers and a long pointed tail. Adult males show a yellow forehead and throat, together with a red band across the throat edge. It is one of three species in Polytelis and is also known as Barraband’s parrot or parakeet, and green leek parrot.
