Calidris virgata
The Surfbird is a medium-sized shorebird with a distinctive mottled brown and black plumage. It is known for its unique habit of foraging along rocky shorelines, where it uses its long, slightly decurved bill to probe for invertebrates in the crevices between rocks. During the breeding season, it migrates to the tundra of Alaska and the Russian Far East, where it nests on the ground and defends its territory vigorously. Outside of the breeding season, it can be found along the Pacific coast of North and South America. The Surfbird is a highly specialized species, adapted to its rocky coastal habitat and the challenges it presents.
