Swainson's Spurfowl is a bird of grasslands and woodlands in southern Africa, breeding in se Angola, n Namibia and Zambia to e Botswana, n South Africa, Zimbabwe and s Mozambique. It belongs to the pheasant family and was first described in 1836. It is also known as Swainson's francolin. In Zimbabwe it has Shona names and is regarded as a delicacy by outdoor and hunting enthusiasts. The species was named for William Swainson, and the scientific name is Pternistis swainsonii.
