Swierstra's Francolin

Pternistis swierstrai

Swierstra's Francolin is a medium-sized bird native to the grasslands and savannas of eastern Africa. It is known for its distinctive call, a series of loud, repetitive 'kwa-kwa-kwa' notes. This species is primarily ground-dwelling, foraging for seeds, fruits, and insects in the grassy vegetation. Swierstra's Francolin forms monogamous pairs during the breeding season, constructing shallow ground nests hidden in the vegetation. Threats to this species include habitat loss and hunting, leading to population declines in some areas. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting its grassland habitats and regulating hunting activities.
