Sykes's Nightjar

Caprimulgus mahrattensis

Sykes's Nightjar (Caprimulgus mahrattensis) is a medium-sized nocturnal bird found in parts of India and Sri Lanka. This species is characterized by its cryptic plumage, large eyes, and a wide gape. It is primarily insectivorous, feeding on moths, beetles, and other flying insects. Sykes's Nightjar is known for its distinctive churring calls during the breeding season. It inhabits open woodlands, scrublands, and grasslands, where it roosts on the ground during the day, relying on its excellent camouflage to avoid detection. Although not currently classified, its population is believed to be declining due to habitat loss and degradation.
