Tawny Antpitta

Grallaria quitensis

The Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria quitensis) is a small, terrestrial bird found in the Andes of South America. It has a distinctive tawny-brown plumage with a speckled appearance, providing excellent camouflage in the dense undergrowth of its cloud forest habitat. This secretive species forages on the forest floor for insects and invertebrates, using its strong legs and sharp bill to probe the leaf litter. Tawny Antpittas are known for their haunting, whistled calls that echo through the misty mountains. Due to its elusive nature, the Tawny Antpitta is often more easily heard than seen by birdwatchers.
