Tawny Frogmouth

Podargus strigoides

The Tawny Frogmouth is a unique species of nocturnal bird native to Australia, known for its owl-like appearance and wide, hooked bill. Despite its owl-like appearance, it is more closely related to nightjars. These birds are masters of camouflage, with mottled grey and brown plumage that helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings. Tawny Frogmouths are primarily insectivorous and are often found perched motionless on tree branches, waiting to ambush their prey. They are known for their distinctive 'frog-like' call, which is often heard at night. These birds are monogamous and form long-term pair bonds, often roosting together during the day.
