Tawny-tufted Toucanet

Selenidera nattereri (Gould, 1835)

Tawny-tufted Toucanet, Selenidera nattereri, is a toucan of north-central Amazonia in South America, recorded from eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela and north-western Brazil, with possible presence in Guyana. It lives in forest, especially on sandy ground and close to water. The species is a resident throughout its range. It is marked by a bill with a red line at the base and a yellow to tawny tuft behind the eye. Males and females share the same bill pattern, though the female’s bill is shorter. It was first described by Gould in 1835 and is the only species in its genus.
