Temminck's tragopan
Tragopan temminckii
Temminck's tragopan is a medium-sized pheasant found in the eastern Himalayas. The male is known for its striking plumage, with bright orange and red feathers on the head and neck, and a black breast and belly. The female is more subtly colored, with mottled brown plumage for camouflage. These birds are known for their distinctive 'popping' calls during the breeding season. They inhabit dense forests and undergrowth, foraging for fruits, insects, and seeds. Due to habitat loss and hunting, their population is declining, and they are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
