Thick-billed Murre

Uria lomvia

The Thick-billed Murre is a seabird that breeds in the Arctic and subarctic regions. It has a black head, back, and wings, with a white underbelly. During the breeding season, it forms large colonies on cliffs and rocky ledges, where it lays a single egg. The Thick-billed Murre is an excellent swimmer and diver, using its wings to propel itself underwater in search of fish and invertebrates. It is known for its loud, braying call and is an important part of the marine ecosystem in its range.
