Tourmaline Sunangel

Heliangelus strophianus

The Tourmaline Sunangel is a striking hummingbird species found in the Andes of South America. It is known for its vibrant plumage, with males displaying iridescent green and blue colors on their head and throat, and a glittering purple gorget. Females have a more subdued coloration with green upperparts and a whitish belly. These birds are typically found in montane forests and shrublands, where they feed on nectar from various flowering plants. They are also known to catch insects in mid-air. The Tourmaline Sunangel plays a vital role in pollination and is an important part of the highland ecosystems where it resides.
