Agelaius tricolor
The Tricolored Blackbird is a medium-sized songbird native to the western United States and Mexico. Males are glossy black with a distinctive red and white patch on the shoulder, while females are brown and streaked. They are social birds, often nesting in large colonies in freshwater marshes, wetlands, and agricultural fields. Tricolored Blackbirds feed on insects, seeds, and grains, and their populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss and nest destruction. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining habitats and nesting sites.
