Tristram's Storm Petrel

Hydrobates tristrami (Salvin, 1896)

Tristram's Storm Petrel, Hydrobates tristrami, breeds in the Pacific Ocean around the Izu and Ogasawara, or Bonin, islands south of Japan, and in the north-western Hawaiian Islands. Outside the breeding season it reaches coastal waters off mainland Japan and as far as Kauai in the main Hawaiian Islands. It is a seabird in the storm petrel family, and is marked by long, angular wings. The species is also known as the sooty storm petrel, and its name honours Henry Baker Tristram.
