Tufted Coquette

Lophornis ornatus

The Tufted Coquette is a striking hummingbird species found in the northern regions of South America. This tiny bird is known for its vibrant plumage and distinctive tuft of feathers on its head. The male sports iridescent green and blue feathers with a white rump, while the female has a more subdued green and white plumage. These birds are often found in tropical lowland forests and gardens, where they feed on nectar from a variety of flowers. They are agile fliers, capable of hovering in front of blossoms while feeding. Despite their small size, they are known for their territorial behavior and can be quite aggressive in defending their feeding areas.
