Tufted Flycatcher

Mitrephanes phaeocercus

The Tufted Flycatcher (Mitrephanes phaeocercus) is a small passerine bird found in the highland forests of Mexico and Central America. It is known for its distinctive tuft of feathers on its head and its olive-green upperparts. The underparts are pale with a yellow tinge. This species is often observed perched in the mid-story or canopy of cloud forests, where it sallies out to catch insects in flight. The Tufted Flycatcher is known for its distinctive call, a sharp 'peet-see' or 'peet-sah'. It is a migratory species, breeding in the highlands and moving to lower elevations in the winter.
