Tumbes Pewee

Contopus punensis

The Tumbes Pewee (Contopus punensis) is a small, insectivorous bird found in the Tumbesian region of northwestern Peru and southwestern Ecuador. It is characterized by its olive-brown upperparts, pale gray underparts, and a distinctive white eye-ring. This species is often found in dry scrub, woodland edges, and semi-open areas, where it perches and sallies to catch flying insects. The Tumbes Pewee is known for its distinctive call, a sharp 'pee-a-wee' often repeated. Its breeding biology and population dynamics are not well studied, and more research is needed to understand its ecology and conservation status.
