Unicorn Guan

Pauxi unicornis

The Unicorn Guan (Pauxi unicornis) is a striking bird species found in the cloud forests of the Andes mountains in South America. This large, turkey-like bird is known for its distinctive crest and vibrant plumage. The male has a glossy black body with white and blue markings, while the female is slightly smaller and has more subdued colors. Unicorn Guans are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits and occasionally insects. They are known for their loud, resonant calls that echo through the forest. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and hunting, the Unicorn Guan is considered vulnerable to extinction.
