Unspotted Saw-whet Owl, Aegolius ridgwayi, is a resident owl of Middle America, breeding from southern Mexico to western Panama in humid montane forest. It is found in oak forest, cloudforest and pine-oak forest, and usually keeps to the canopy, though it also uses more open places near forest edges. This owl is nocturnal and generally solitary outside the breeding season. It nests in cavities, including old woodpecker holes and natural hollows, and the breeding period runs from at least March to July. The male gives a whistled territorial call, while both sexes also produce sharper notes.
