Usambiro Barbet

Trachyphonus usambiro Neumann, 1908

Lybiidae — African Barbets

Usambiro Barbet, Trachyphonus usambiro, is a bird of the African barbet family Lybiidae that breeds in south-west Kenya and north-west Tanzania. It was first described by Neumann in 1908 and is now recognised as a full species. Compared with D'Arnaud's barbet, it has longer wings, a shorter tail and a darker bill. It lives in open country, including savannah, grassland, shrubland and pastures, and occurs from 1,100 to 2,100 m above sea-level. In areas shared with Red-and-yellow barbet, it keeps to flat ground rather than streambeds.
