Megapodius pritchardii
The Vanuatu Megapode, scientifically known as Megapodius pritchardii, is a medium-sized bird endemic to the islands of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. This ground-dwelling bird is known for its unique nesting behavior, as it relies on geothermal heat to incubate its eggs. The Vanuatu Megapode has a distinctive brown plumage with black markings and a prominent red facial patch. It forages in the forest undergrowth for insects, seeds, and fruits. Due to habitat loss and hunting pressure, the species faces conservation challenges, and its population trend is currently decreasing.
