The Variable Pitohui is a small passerine bird native to New Guinea. It is known for its striking appearance, with a combination of black, orange, and white plumage. The species is infamous for its toxic skin and feathers, containing a potent neurotoxin. This adaptation is a defense mechanism against predators, making the Variable Pitohui one of the few known poisonous birds. These birds primarily inhabit lowland and montane forests, foraging for insects and small fruits. Despite their toxic nature, they are not considered a threat to humans. The conservation status of the Variable Pitohui is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
