Variable Woodpecker, Celeus undatus, is a woodpecker of south-western and central Amazonia in South America, from south-eastern Colombia and eastern Peru to central Brazil and the Guianas. It belongs to the family Picidae and the order Piciformes. Its range also includes the wider Amazonian region across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela. The species is notable for a complex taxonomic history, and the name undatus comes from Medieval Latin for wavy or wavelike. It was first described by Linnaeus in 1766.
