Varied Sittella

Gavicalis versicolor

The Varied Sittella (Gavicalis versicolor) is a small, active songbird found in the woodlands and forests of eastern and southeastern Australia. It is known for its distinctive high-pitched calls and its acrobatic foraging behavior, often seen moving headfirst down tree trunks in search of insects and spiders. The Varied Sittella has a striking plumage, with a combination of black, white, and chestnut colors. It forms tight-knit family groups and is often found in mixed-species foraging flocks. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation pose potential risks to its populations.
