Varied Sittella

Daphoenositta miranda

The Varied Sittella (Daphoenositta miranda) is a small, active bird found in the eucalypt forests and woodlands of eastern and southeastern Australia. It is known for its distinctive habit of moving up and down tree trunks and branches in search of insects and spiders. This species has a unique cooperative breeding system where young from previous broods help their parents raise new chicks. The Varied Sittella is easily recognized by its striking black and white plumage, with a chestnut-colored patch on its back. It has a high-pitched, chattering call that is often heard as it moves through the forest canopy.
