Variegated Bee-eater

Merops variegatus

The Variegated Bee-eater (Merops variegatus) is a colorful and agile bird found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a slender body, long pointed wings, and a distinctive long, downturned bill, which it uses to catch flying insects. This species is known for its vibrant plumage, which includes a combination of green, blue, and chestnut colors. Variegated Bee-eaters are often found in open woodlands, savannas, and grasslands, where they can be seen perched on branches or wires, waiting to catch their prey. They are highly social birds and are often observed in small groups or pairs. During the breeding season, they excavate tunnels in sandy banks to build their nests.
