Vaux's Swift

Chaetura vauxi

Vaux's Swift is a small, highly aerial bird found in western North America. It is known for its rapid, erratic flight and distinctive high-pitched chittering calls. This species is often observed foraging for insects on the wing, rarely perching except to roost or nest. Vaux's Swifts are migratory, spending the breeding season in coniferous forests and the non-breeding season in South America. They construct their nests behind waterfalls or in hollow trees, using their saliva to glue twigs together. This species faces threats from habitat loss and the decline of suitable roosting sites in urban areas.
