Platyspiza crassirostris (Gould, 1837)

Vegetarian Finch, Platyspiza crassirostris, lives in the Galápagos in South America and is the only species placed in Platyspiza. It belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae and was first described by Gould in 1837. Found on seven islands, it occurs from sea level to 500 m. It is most often seen in montane evergreen forest, especially the transition zone, but also reaches humid and arid areas. It is one of Darwin’s finches, a Galápagos lineage within the tanagers, and its name reflects its plant-based diet.
