Velvet Asity

Philepitta castanea

The Velvet Asity (Philepitta castanea) is a small, striking bird found in the rainforests of Madagascar. It is known for its vibrant plumage, with males sporting a velvety black body, bright blue facial skin, and a brilliant yellow crown. Females have a more subdued olive-green plumage. These birds are nectarivorous, using their specialized beaks to feed on nectar, insects, and small fruits. They are often observed flitting among the forest canopy, emitting high-pitched calls. The Velvet Asity plays a crucial role in pollination and seed dispersal within its habitat.
