Velvety Black Tyrant, Knipolegus nigerrimus, is a passerine of eastern and south-eastern Brazil, where it breeds in montane grasslands. It is a member of the Tyrannidae family and was described by Vieillot in 1818. The species is found in two separated parts of Brazil, with the nominate form in the south-east and another form farther north. It is linked to rocky ground with scattered trees and shrubs, and usually occurs at high elevations, though it can also be found lower down.
