Velvety Manakin

Velvety Manakin, Lepidothrix velutina, is a passerine in the manakin family and breeds from Costa Rica through Panama to north-west Ecuador. It was first described by Berlepsch in 1883. The species has a split range, with one form on the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of Costa Rica and Panama, and another extending through Colombia to Ecuador. It lives in humid primary forest and mature secondary forest. The species is sexually dimorphic, and males and females differ in plumage. Two subspecies are recognised by systems that treat it as a full species.
