Verdin

Auriparus flaviceps

The Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps) is a small, active bird found in arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is easily recognized by its bright yellow head and chestnut shoulder patch. Verdin are highly social and often seen in pairs or small groups, foraging for insects and seeds in thorny shrubs and desert vegetation. They construct intricate, globular nests made of twigs and grass, which are often suspended from the tips of branches. Verdin are well-adapted to desert life, obtaining most of their water from their food. They are known for their cheerful, tinkling song.
