Pooecetes gramineus
The Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus) is a medium-sized sparrow with a streaked brown back, white belly, and distinct white eye ring. It is known for its melodious and variable song, often heard during the evening hours. This species is commonly found in open grasslands, prairies, and agricultural fields across North America. Vesper Sparrows forage on the ground for seeds and insects, often using their strong, conical bills to crack open seeds. During the breeding season, they build cup-shaped nests on the ground or in low vegetation. While the Vesper Sparrow is currently considered a species of least concern, its population is declining due to habitat loss and changes in agricultural practices.
