Vieillot's Barbet

Lybius vieilloti (Leach, 1815)

Vieillot's Barbet, Lybius vieilloti, lives in African scrubland across central, western and eastern parts of the continent, with breeding recorded from Senegal to Ethiopia and also in savannah, farmland and wooded creeks. It is a resident breeder in these areas and nests in tree holes, laying three eggs. The bird is a sparrow-sized, plump barbet with a short neck, large head and short tail. Adults have a red head, red and white on the neck and breast, dark brown upperparts with a yellow stripe along the back, and yellowish underparts with dark flank spotting.
