Vietnamese Cutia

Pterorhinus berthemyi

The Vietnamese Cutia (Pterorhinus berthemyi) is a medium-sized bird found in the montane forests of Vietnam. It has a distinctive appearance with a bright red bill, black head, and grayish-blue body. The species is known for its shy and elusive nature, often foraging in the dense undergrowth for fruits, insects, and small invertebrates. The Vietnamese Cutia is typically observed in small groups or pairs, and its melodious calls can be heard echoing through the forest. While not much is known about its breeding behavior, it is believed to construct cup-shaped nests in the forest canopy. Threats to this species include habitat loss due to deforestation and potential hunting, leading to its classification as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
