Village Indigobird, Vidua chalybeata, breeds across western, central and south-eastern Africa and is most often noticed close to villages, though it also uses open woodland, scrub and cultivated land. It is a small songbird in the family Viduidae. The species is set apart from other indigobirds by the colours of the bill and legs, the tint of the male’s breeding plumage, and its song; the young also show useful differences in plumage and mouth pattern. Males may have red or white bills, and their plumage tone varies by region.
