Aglaiocercus coelestis (Gould, 1861)

Violet-tailed Sylph, Aglaiocercus coelestis, is a hummingbird of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. It belongs to the family Trochilidae and was described by Gould in 1861. The species is a resident of cloudforest and also uses more open country where woodland gives way to grassland, or where trees and shrubs are scattered through grass. It is most often recorded around 1,000 m, but it ranges from 300 m to 2,100 m. The breeding range includes the Pacific slope of Colombia’s Western Andes and south-western Ecuador. Two subspecies are recognised.
