Virginia Rail

Rallus limicola

The Virginia Rail is a secretive marsh bird found in wetlands across North America. It is characterized by its reddish-brown plumage, long bill, and short tail. These birds are skilled at navigating through dense vegetation and are often heard making a series of grunting calls. They forage for insects, small fish, and seeds in their marshy habitat, using their long toes to walk on floating vegetation. Virginia Rails are known for their elaborate courtship displays, which involve bill-dipping and fluffing of feathers. While their populations are generally stable, loss of wetland habitats poses a threat to their long-term survival.
